Maya Deren, the Director
Maya Deren was born in Eleonora Derenkowska, was a Ukrainian-born American filmmaker and one of the most important American experimental filmmakers and entrepreneurial promoters of the avant-garde in the 1940s and 1950s. Deren was also a choreographer, dancer, film theorist, poet, lecturer, writer, and photographer. She was a full-time female artist who has been active in various fields such as dance, film, and film theory in the 1940s. She is known as the founder of Dance film. After moving to the US, she worked as a photographer for a while, then worked as a secretary for Catherine Dunham of Dunham Dance Company. After that, her 16mm camera, which she inherited from his father, directs her debut film, Meshes of the Afternoon. Experience at Dunham Dance Company has become the founder of Dance film. Meshes of the Afternoon is a collaboration with her husband Alexander Hamid. Alexander Hamid was one of the most famous American cinematographers at the time and was also a major avant-garde in Czechoslovakia. After taking the Meshes of the Afternoon, this work became the subject of the short section of the Cannes Film Festival.
The Meshes of the Afternoon has a complicated and intertwined repetitive cycle. The film is suffering from a woman who is wearing a hood and is tracking a person with a glass face. It's an expressionist movie with dreamy and repetitive narratives as well as odd angles. One woman is Maya Deren herself, and according to Maya Deren, the Meshes of the Afternoon deals with the inner experience of the individual. Unlike other avant-garde films that deal with dreams and unconsciousness, there is a complexity that is not related to dreams or unconsciousness (although there is a scene of sleeping in the chair and waking up at the end). Early works by Maya Delan can be seen as typical of the so-called 'psychodrama' films in the US after the war. It is included in such a "psychodrama" such as <Meshes of the Afternoon>, <At Land>, Kenneth Anger's <fireworks display> and Stan Bradie's early film <Resistance movie>. Adams Citi, who advocated this, argues that these films are characterized by 'pursuit of sexual identity' and in pure form, the director plays the protagonist. In Europe, it became more famous as it was rated as a movie that showed a new paradigm following European avant-garde movies.
